The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has committed an additional $1 billion to combat highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in commercial poultry, support farmers who have lost flocks to the disease and ultimately to reduce the cost of eggs to American consumers.

The five-pronged strategy, an­nounced Feb. 26, includes $500 million for on-farm biosecurity improvements, $400 million in financial relief for affected farmers and $100 million for vaccine research. 

Additionally, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins an­­nounced measures to reduce the regulatory burdens on producers and is exploring temporary import changes to let more eggs into the country.
