New protections proposed for monarch butterfly

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is proposing to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.
The proposed rule would provide protections to aid in the monarch’s recovery by increasing conservation habitats such as milkweeds and nectar plants under section 4(d) of the Endangered Species Act. The agency is accepting comments on the proposal until March 12.
