Patriotism runs especially high this time of year as the U.S. flag flies over fireworks and small-town parades celebrating our country’s independence.

So it’s fitting that the American Farm Bureau Federation chose the week after the Fourth of July to launch a new award called the Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence honoring a veteran who has served or is currently serving in any branch of the U.S. military and is actively involved in agriculture and their community.

I can think of a plethora of Farm Bureau members in Iowa who would be extremely deserving of the award, and I’m sure my colleagues in every state feel the same.

Farmers and veterans are also among some of the most humble people I’ve met, so they may be reluctant to nominate themselves for the award. However, in addition to the well-deserved public recognition, there’s a considerable financial prize attached to this award sponsored by Farm Credit that makes it worth applying or nominating someone you know.

The winner will receive a $10,000 prize and up to $5,000 reimbursement for them and a guest to attend the 2025 American Farm Bureau annual convention in San Antonio.

Applicants may apply themselves or be nominated by Aug. 30 at fb.org/veteranfarmer. Applications will be reviewed based on excellence in farming and community impact, with the winner announced on Veterans Day. Nominees aren’t required to be Farm Bureau members.

If you know of a deserving candidate, and I’m sure most of us can think of more than one friend or family member who fits the description, I encourage you to nominate them.
