The terms meat, milk and eggs should only be used to describe food items that come from animals, county voting delegates said last week in a resolution adopted at the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s annual policy-setting conference.
The policy strikes at the growing proliferation of companies using those terms to attract consumers to purchase alternative protein food products, such as lab-grown meat substitutes and non-dairy drinks that mimic the characteristics of meat and milk produced from animals. Members felt strongly that food labels should be factual and not misleading to consumers.
