Report shows lower number of cattle on feed

There were 10.6 million head of cattle and calves on feed in U.S. feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head on Jan. 1, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its report last week. The inventory was slightly below Jan. 1, 2015, the report said.
There were 620,000 head of cattle on feed in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head as of Jan. 1, 2016, the USDA said. This was down 3 percent from Jan. 1, 2015, the report noted.
There were 1.53 million head placed in U.S. feedlots during December 2015, the USDA said. This was 1 percent below December 2014, the report said.
