U.S. cattle herd down 3%
The U.S. cattle herd in feedlots of 1,000 head or more totaled 11.7 million Jan. 1. This total was 3% below the Jan. 1, 2022, inventory but even month-over-month.

Iowa’s cattle and calves on feed in lots of 1,000 head or more totaled 620,000, down 2% from the Dec. 1 inventory, but up 3% compared to the Jan. 1, 2022, count.
