The past 12 months have been marked by significant challenges and accomplishments for farmers in Iowa and across the United States.
As we head into the new year, we take one last look back at 10 of the most important stories of the past 12 months. Of course, there are many other stories that impacted agriculture in 2024 and will continue to do so in 2025. As always, you can count on the Spokesman and Iowa Farm Bureau to keep you informed all year long.
Farm income plunges, layoffs impact agriculture
After reaching record highs in 2022, farm income fell for the second consecutive year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) pegged net farm income at $140.7 billion in 2024. The decline was led by a $25 billion plunge in crop receipts, particularly for corn and soybeans, which fell 20.8% and 12.3%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
