Iowa Farm Bureau is proud to sponsor HeadStrong concussion insurance for all of Iowa’s high school athletes. Sports are the number two cause of traumatic brain injuries to young people, behind only motor vehicles. In partnership with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association, we’re happy to do our part to protect the bodies and minds of future generations of Iowans. This insurance is free for all Iowa high school athletes. To learn more, read about our IGHSAU coverage and our IHSAA coverage .
Laurie Johns explains in this week's Iowa Minute!
Iowa Minute Transcript
Laurie Johns: Football and volleyball games, and soon, basketball games, are in full swing at high schools across the state. Team sports are great, but not without risk. Did you know that sport is second only to motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of traumatic brain injury to young people? That's why HeadStrong concussion insurance, sponsored by Iowa Farm Bureau, is being offered to all male and female athletes. This new coverage is provided by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU).
Jean Berger (Executive Director, IGHSAU): I think most people understand concussions happen in football, but for young girls, soccer is the sport that has the most concern. For soccer girls, per capita, there are more concussions than football. It's not about gender, it's not about sport, it affects everybody.
Johns: Iowa's only one of seven high school athletic associations to offer it to both boys and girls. It's free! For more information, check out these websites. With your Iowa Minute, I'm Laurie Johns.
