Fall is a great time to apply lime to correct soil pH imbalances. Maintaining proper soil pH is the foundation to good soil fertility and achieving maximum yield.
As soil pH declines, more hydrogen ions (H+) occupy cation exchange (CE) sites that should contain crop nutrients necessary for crop growth. It is only through the addition of carbonate-containing material such as lime that calcium and/or magnesium ions displace H+, form water and release carbon dioxide.
