In October, upper elementary students in Fayette County are diving into the world of Iowa's pork industry, with a special focus on the design and purpose of pork barns. This engaging educational initiative combines science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) principles, allowing students to explore the structural requirements and functions of these barns.

Through a hands-on challenge, students work in teams to construct their own pork barns using household supplies. They learn about essential elements like ventilation, space efficiency, and animal welfare while fostering collaboration and problem-solving skills. This project not only highlights Iowa's significance in pork production but also encourages creativity and critical thinking as students adapt their designs to meet specific criteria. By the end of the month, participants will have a deeper understanding of agriculture's role in their community and the innovative engineering behind sustainable farming practices.
