Agency to study population status of monarch butterfly

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced last week that it is undertaking a 12-month review of the population status of the monarch butterfly. The action is potentially a step toward possibly putting the butterfly on the list of threatened species, which is one step away from endangered status, under the Endangered Species Act.
