The Clayton County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom coordinator recently visited the 4th grade classes at Central Elkader Elementary to teach students about the surprising diversity of agricultural products grown right here in Iowa. While many students were already familiar with crops like corn and soybeans, they were surprised to learn that Iowa is also home to producers raising shrimp, turkeys, and even growing popcorn. The lesson emphasized that agriculture in Iowa isn't just limited to large-scale farms, but also includes smaller operations that contribute to a wide range of food and goods.

The coordinator also discussed the vital role agriculture plays in Iowa's economy and communities. Students learned how farming supports local jobs, fuels local businesses, and provides food for not only Iowans but also people across the country. This lesson helped them understand the broad impact of agriculture, from the meals on their tables to the strength of their community, fostering a deeper appreciation for the state's farming heritage.
